On Sunday, January 1st I got on the treadmill and tested myself. I’d been in a slump for a few months. My eating habits had gotten bad again, working out was a rare occurrence and I’d gained back ten pounds of the 26 I’d lost. Stepping on that treadmill was like starting all over again from zero. I wanted to know how long I could run, so I warmed up with a five minute brisk walk and then kicked it up and started running. After about a minute I was very winded. By the time I got to two minutes my throat was burning and Continue reading
Moderation
I’ve been thinking about the importance of moderation this morning. It’s something I try to keep in mind throughout the day because it applies to so many things.
Right now I’m focusing pretty hard on what I eat because I need to lose weight as part of my personal initiative to get healthy. For many years, I’ve had a problem with eating more food than I needed to be eating. That didn’t serve me well because now I’m a fat guy. When I look at what I’ve done and realize Continue reading
The Power of Inertia
I’ve been working to get myself in shape since last April with varying amounts of intensity and focus. Starting on the first of this month, I renewed my focus and put the full force of my will behind the effort.
At the beginning of the month, it wasn’t easy getting up at five o’clock. It was kind of a struggle to limit myself to smaller meals. There didn’t seem to be anything to write about on this blog. Today it’s easier to do all of these things. It’s even starting to feel like Continue reading

Spook Country
I’m currently reading Spook Country by William Gibson. There’s a pretty good chance that I’m going to stop reading it, take my bookmark and go find another book to read. The book isn’t bad. I’m about 100 pages in and I like the story so far. The problem I’m having is with the style of writing Gibson uses in this novel.
He’s obviously a very intelligent man, but the way he structures his sentences and the combinations of words he uses make for an uncomfortable read. Because this is the first William Gibson book I’ve attempted to read, I don’t know if all of his books are like this, or if he just pulled out all the stops with this one and tried to use every word in his Thesaurus while writing it. Good Eating Habits
Part of my path to getting healthy has been learning good eating habits. Along with exercise, teaching myself how to properly eat has helped me make a good change in my life. In the last nine months I have decreased my weight by a little more than 25 pounds. Here’s what I’ve learned about healthy eating. Continue reading
Knowledge vs. Behavior
The alarm went off at five o’clock Sunday morning. It was an especially cold morning. Instead of climbing out of bed, I slid across the bed and snuggled up with my wife, who was nice and warm. I really didn’t want to get up.
I had a decision to make. Either get out of bed and go work up a sweat in the gym or stay in that nice warm bed with my nice warm wife Continue reading
